NTPC  limited currently has eight hydro electric projects aggregating 12,702 MW at various stage of development.Of these 1,320 MW is under construction including the koldam project in the himachal pradesh and the tapovan-vishnugad project in uttarakhand.

The tapovan-vishnugad project is expexted to have an installed capacity of 520 MW.The project is located on the dhauliganga river,which is a tributary of the alaknanda.The site is 280km from the nearest railhead at rishikesh.

The project is located between the 440 MW vishnuagad-pipalkoti hydroelectric plant and the 171 MW lata-tapovan facility.Uttarakhand will be the beneficiary stste of the Rs29.78 billion project.The project has a total catchment area of 3,100 square km and a snow-bound catchment area of 1,483 square km.
